    Someone at church asked me to help his neighbor who is making a game like Pokémon to be the game artist. And I was blown away by this. Like I’m only 10! They chose me because I was the best drawer at church and the maker of the game sucked at it. The creator is a bit older than me but it’s still a big job. I was given the job of making every monster and their name and type. Making their name is more complicated than you think. You have to think of a name that fits the character. Like you wouldn’t name a water serpent charco because it sounds like charcoal.

    Besides my OCs I've drawn other already existing characters like Conker The Squirrel and Banjo and Kazooie and I have drawn a bunch of Pokemon and I have drawn a Gundam Mech and I even drew Kaneda Shotaro from Akira and I drew Chihiro Ogino from Spirited Away and I drew Bulma from Dragon Ball and there are many more that I have drawn

    I'm a YouTuber but I plan on being a video game 🎮 designer I'm still going to be making videos for YouTube. I also really like to draw and I've drawn my own OCs like Kentaro Ryuji he's a hero and I have drawn only two girls so far Kate Moon and Yuri Kasumi and so far only two villains one is a Ninja named Viper and a robot named Vilerborgx and I have drawn two cats Mr and Mrs Whiskers they're stray cats who are a couple and Kentaro Ryuji has a pet dog named Kido The Pooch I haven't drawn the fog yet but I will soon and I will also draw myself as an OC and they will all be the characters for the games that I will be making also these are the kinds of I will make Adventure games, Racing games, and Fighting games and later on in the future I will also make Action Adventure games, Platform games, and Open World games, and RPG games and maybe even some Simulator games and of course I will draw more OCs but that's in the future so anyway I want to find a good program or studio that can help me make those video games and I wouldn't mind working with others because there's going to be a lot for the games like The characters, the worlds and stages, and then stuff like weapons items like healing items like foods and potions stuff like that and the games will be rates E games only I don't plan on making Rated M games so I will make Rated E games and E10 and up games

    Not as diverse and inclusive as it needs to be to achieve what? Diversity of thoughts and opinions s paramount for game design but it's absolutely not the kind of diversity people have in mind when they speak about "diversity". Enforcing diversity of identity and background may cause self-censorship hence reducing the kinds of diversity that actually matter.

    And inclusivity just doesn't affect the industry at all. It doesn't need to be inclusive. But unlike (the wrong kinds of) diversity it at least doesn't harm it either so inclusivity is nice to have. Not needed though.

    1 Work in a restaurant
    2 Work in a dozens of restaurants
    3 Actually learn how to cook
    Makes sense…… You actually didn't say anything about becoming a designer

    I wonder how much the last part of your video would have changed with the stuff that is coming out right now out of Activision Blizzard. I would suggest trying out the Indie scene as a side hustle first before trying to go all out into the business, and with all these unfinished games coming out of large studios the Indie scene might be where the future of gaming is going anyway unless the Triple A scene makes major changes in the near future.

    An observation from observing the footage of industry people in the video: it seems that something that greatly increases your chances of aligning to the company culture is to be:
    * slim or average weight
    * caucasian or asian
    The lack of diversity saddens me and indicates that fostering healthy culture is especially difficult (or ignored) in the games industry. I really hope the industry recognises how important diversity is and recognises that actively focusing on culture is the only way to improve diversity.

    Or just do it yourself (going indie). If you are truly creative and have an awesome idea in your head, work for yourself instead and not for another company. Indies are the future.

    4:20 "If you really don't want to learn how to code"…
    This is such a bad attitude for anyone who works with a computer. This thought should be anathema if you want to be successful as a digital artist. Sure, plenty of people get by without it. Do you want to get by, or do you want to be better than them? Computers speak in code. That's their language! I wouldn't open up a restaurant in Italy without learning Italian first. I wouldn't start a job as a truck driver without learning how to change oil, tires, fix and replace parts, and do basic mechanic work.
    If you work with a computer, you should learn at least the basics of programming. It's the way you talk to the computer directly, in its own language, using your own words. Otherwise, you can only tell the computer to do what other people have programmed it to — words other people have written. And just like the truck driver, who understands the engine but isn't a semi-truck mechanic, there's no need to know everything at the finest detail either. The computer is a tool, and anyone who uses it as a tool should respect the tool enough to learn how to use it, and respect themselves enough to push themselves to be better than the people who settle for not knowing.
    For context, I am a computer graphics artist who gets a lot done because I can make my own tools and use tools other people have written. It's all ugly codey-looking stuff, but it makes it so I can spend a lot more time making good art and finishing projects. It helps me spend less time on the boring stuff and more time making decisions, and it's put me closer to my tools by understanding everything more and more. The deeper I go, the more benefits I find for me real goal — making characters come to life in video. For a game designer, it should be obvious that knowing how to program, at least in a basic way, will yield even more benefits.
    EDIT: to be clear, this isnt' a criticism of Mark's advice, just a criticism of people who think that they can 'just do art' with a computer.

    If you don't want to crunch, and don't want to experience (or constantly overlook) sexual harassment, you basically can't work at any of the game studios profiled in this video, since they've all had both. Also, the networking events built around drinking alcohol, often to excess (which contribute further to the sexual harassment), might rule out all those studios for some people as well. Those are problems at just about every major studio, **and many indies as well**. But game publishing and distribution is much more accessible nowadays to small groups/individuals, so you definitely can do it alone or with a few friends – if you're serious and work to improve and have consistent releases and build a following, you can have a full-time job as a non-studio designer.

    I think maybe it's okay to be a little picky since being associated with certain industry names can limit your opportunities going forward. a lot of big industry names have decided to trade on their reputation to produce garbage products and if they're eager to hire you right out of art school it's because they're looking for cheap labor rather than talent. take a job with them and you'll always be perceived as unskilled cheap labor.
