The question of “Do I need to Learn how to Rig in order to Become an Animator” is one that I get quite often here in this channel. So let’s try and answer that in this video.

What's animation logic?
In my personal experience, I have found that those animators that do know or tried a bit of rigging, that it really helps communication between the departments as well as understanding the limitations or the needs of a rig and even tools. I do not expect it from animators, but it always does smooth things out in the end and makes for happy riggers and animators alike. 😃
Great vid as usual. A video tip: Maya vs Motionbuilder!
Happy new year everyone! I am/was almost exactly in the situation you described, the first game job I got is in a semi-indie studio where I am the only animator, at the beginning of production I had to do a lot of catching up on the rigging side because I never focused as much on it in 3D school. I definitely did some mistakes at first and had to rebuild some rigs a few times but I learned a lot, especially since I had to integrate my animations as well and being familiar with the joint structure of your characters is a big help.
Lately I have been using an auto rigger and I think it is a very valid option when you don't gave a proper rigger on your team, the speed at which you can build functional rigs is impressive, that way you can focus on the skinning and animation more. And you can find some really affordable ones with lots of features and adaptability, I definitely recommend if anyone is in this kind of situation.
Hey Harvey cool video! I wanted to talk about a different topic that is related to this. I like a lot creature animation but I don’t know if game studios like creature stuff. What would be your advice for creature animators? Aside from that keep up the amazing work, and happy 2022!!
harvey back on the grind! lets go 2022!
I have only worked in AAA so far so i have not needed to rig anything as of yet. But I do want to eventually learn rigging so when i come across small problems at work i can fix it quick and simple. Thanks for the vid Harvey!
Thanks as always for the vids Harvey just started my second class of AM this week. We're currently working on posing this week.
In short, if you want to become a master just focus on one thing…I got the point 😀
Happy new year Harvey!!! Hope everything goes great this year for you 🎉🎉🎉
I was taught a little bit of modeling and rigging because they wanted to teach us like generalists of animation and games. Learning a bit of everything it's good, now I'll try to specialize in animation by myself. Happy new year guys!
